Seaward walking and cycling path major step forward

Seaward walking and cycling path major step forward for region’s transport and resilience

The seaward side option for a new walking and cycling path between Ngauranga and Petone is a major step forward for cycling and walking and resilience in the Wellington region, says Greater Wellington Regional Council Chair Chris Laidlaw.

“A safe, scenic walking and cycling path will encourage a lot more people to cycle commute between Wellington and the Hutt Valley, which is great for their health and wellbeing and will help reduce traffic congestion along this part of SH2.

“The seaward path will also provide a buffer for the railway line in severe storm events and a stronger seawall will protect the bulk water pipes that run through this area, making this vital infrastructure more resilient.

Cr Laidlaw says given the seaward path involves reclamation of the harbour, the consent process will be extremely rigorous. “I’m confident that we’ll be able to work through all the issues and come up with appropriate, effective solutions.”
