Heading to Hospital? Christchurch Hospital’s popular Park & Ride service is changing location
From Tuesday 1 December 2015, Christchurch Hospital’s popular Park & Ride car park will move from its current site and relocate to a new purpose-built car park on Deans Avenue, on land formerly occupied by the Sale Yards.
Since it was set up, just over a year ago, the Park & Ride service has carried more than 200,000 passengers. From 1 December it will continue to operate a shuttle service from the old sale yards site in Deans Avenue to Christchurch Hospital. A shuttle will depart the car-park every 15 minutes.
The Park & Ride car park is being moved because early works are planned to take place mid-2016 for the new Metro Sport Facility.
David Meates, Canterbury District Health Board chief executive, says instead of waiting until the middle of next year to find a new car park, Canterbury DHB has proactively taken the opportunity to make use of a new car park currently under development on Deans Avenue.
“We recognise that car parking is at an absolute premium in the city centre, so we’re pleased to be able to continue running the free Park & Ride service for our patients and visitors,” Mr Meates says.
“Aside from the change in location, users of the service should find everything else the same – the same parking costs, the same free shuttle and friendly drivers, the same hours of operation, and the same pick up and drop off arrangements at hospital as now.”
Mr Meates says even the journey time should still be the same because, despite the Sale Yards being further away, the shuttles have fewer traffic lights to negotiate.
“We’ve also arranged for one of our portacoms to be moved to the new car park to provide a bigger more comfortable shelter for those waiting for shuttles, and we will have 300 spaces allocated for sole use by Canterbury DHB patients and visitors.”
Another bonus of the new car park is the surface will be much smoother, Mr Meates says.
“It’s been prepared for long-term use, complete with drainage.”
Volunteers will be on hand at the new car park during the opening week to help people with the new location.
