Change the course of history with strategic thinking

Change the course of history with strategic thinking at LibraryCon

Dunedin (Wednesday, 18 November) – Dunedin City Library’s Teen Space will be alive with enactments of battles, both historical and imagined, when the Otago Miniature Tacticians Society (OMTS) launch their inaugural “LibraryCon” on Saturday, 21 November for International Games Day.

OMTS was founded in 1970 and is New Zealand's oldest established wargaming club, meeting on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month at Forbury Trotting Club. For Librarycon the club will provide full gaming terrains and model armies for historical games such as Flames of War and Wings of Glory, alongside those of Warhammer and X-Wing, and role-play games such as Pathfinder. Everyone is invited to come along and give table-top gaming a go, with expert players on hand to teach them the ropes.

Dunedin Public Libraries are keen to encourage people to try table-top gaming because it is a friendly social experience promoting strategic thinking and involving creative skills.

“Most of the games also have books associated with them, either fictional series, historical literature, or codexes and companion guides”, says Libraries’ Events Coordinator, Kay Mercer, “so this is also a great opportunity to promote books and reading in an area which is likely to be of particular interest to teens, but appeals to older adults too.”

President of OMTS, Lindsay Harrison, is looking forward to the opportunity to showcase the society and encourage new members.

“I’d like to see this become an annual event at the Library”, he says, “and it will be a good rehearsal for when we host our big NatCon event 25-27 March next year with players attending the Dunedin-hosted convention from all over New Zealand.”
