Bay of Plenty’s biggest road works season continues: allow extra time when travelling

The NZ Transport Agency is asking people to allow extra time when travelling around the Bay of Plenty, as the region’s biggest road works season gets underway.

Transport Agency work crews will be out in force over the next five months, making the most of the warmer, dryer weather over summer to make highways safer, and progress major projects.

Drivers are likely to encounter speed restrictions and other traffic management at roadwork sites over the next few months, and should get in the habit of allowing extra time for their journeys.

The Transport Agency’s Bay of Plenty journeys manager, Nigel D’Ath says summer is the best time to reseal roads, as the warm temperatures and dry air helps the new seal to stick to the existing road surface.

He says the Transport Agency is grateful to motorists for their patience and understanding at roadworks sites.

“We understand road works can inconvenience people on their journeys. Dust, noise, speed restrictions and detours can really frustrate drivers and passengers, which is why we’re giving people as much information as we can so they can be prepared and avoid frustrating delays.

“The more you plan the better prepared you will be for a more predictable journey.”

Road work sites which may cause delays over the next week are detailed below to help people plan ahead:

Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road: The asphalt work on the westbound lanes (towards Tauranga) is complete but due to poor weather work to the eastbound lanes (towards Paengaroa) has been rescheduled. It will be carried out on Monday 23 November through to Wednesday 25 November.

A 50km/h speed restriction will be in place between 6am and 6pm, and 80km/h between 6pm and 6am and drivers should expect minor delays.

Drivers have the option to use the Te Puke Highway as an alternative route. The work is weather dependent.

SH2 Fibre optic cabling: Speed restrictions and shoulder closures will be in place between Old Tauranga Road and Athenree over the next week as contractors continue installing fibre optic cables. Motorists should allow an extra five minutes when travelling through the area.

SH35 and SH2 East Cape reseal and rock fall prevention works: Contractorswill be carrying out work on sections of SH2 between Matata and south of Opotiki, and SH35, between Opotiki and Whangaparaoa, over the next week.

Speed restrictions and other traffic management will be in place and motorists are advised to allow an extra 10 minutes when travelling on these routes.
