Vandalised art work to be removed

An installation in Karori designed to commemorate fallen soldiers has been vandalised beyond repair. Remembrance, in Appleton Park is a work by artist Chris Bennewith made up of 860 white poles which bobbed in the breeze during the day and illuminated with red light as the poles move in the wind by night, in a scene the artist likened to a poppy field.

On Saturday night, Remembrance sustained significant damage. Balls were ripped from poles, poles were torn from the ground – some taken completely – and the locked transformer box was forced open and cables removed.

The piece was due to be on display until December until 2 December, but is beyond repair and will be removed by the artist tomorrow.
