Summer brings Gourmet Night Market back to the Mount

MEDIA RELEASE

Summer brings Gourmet Night Market back to the Mount

23 November 2015

The third Gourmet Night Market season kicks off Friday December 4th in Mt Maunganui from 5pm. The family-friendly summer event has been extremely popular with locals and visitors attracting around 5000 hungry patrons on Fridaynights.

Situated in Coronation Park, the market has a stunning view of the Mount where diners can laze and graze all while being entertained by fresh local acoustic musicians. Local musician Izzy Bones and group The Salty Dogs, who have just released their first EP, will be performing at the first Gourmet Night Market on Friday December 4th.

As well as providing a stage for local musicians, Gourmet Night Market is also hosting a number of top local restaurant chefs. This year Flour & Water, Rye American Restaurant and Postbank’s Glenn Stubbs join Elizabeth Café & Larder, Delissi, Mount Bistro, The Barrio Brothers and Satori Lounge. Chefs enjoy the altered dynamic of cooking outdoors, meeting their customers in person and the unique opportunity to create “street food” versions of restaurant fare.

The restauranteurs join specialist mobile food vendors, caterers and home cooks in the 50+ stalls offering desserts, tapas, dinner options, handmade drinks and speciality artisan food products. Expect to find mussels and calamari, Dutch stroopwaffels and French crepes, woodfire pizza and gourmet burgers, pita breads and po-boy sandwiches, fried chicken, BBQ and slow roasted meats, juices and smoothies, frozen yoghurt and gelato, cheesecake and brownies, freshly made salads and much much more.

As well as being extremely tasty, the event is also leading the zero waste movement, diverting an impressive 97.5% of their waste from landfill during last summer. The Gourmet Night Market has a sustainability crew of 40 locals who use the opportunity to give back to their community and contribute to environmental awareness.

Event manager Kim Renshaw, who also coordinates Beyond the Bin (a social enterprise specialising in waste education), will be running the market every Friday except for Christmas day and January the 8th, expecting crowds of 4000-6000 people. As well as the gourmet food stalls, there will be a boutique farmers market selling fresh fruit and vegetables, handmade dog treats, Flaveur bread and other artisan products.
