Time to celebrate the new Upper Hutt Station

It’s time to celebrate the wonderful, brand new station at Upper Hutt! Mark the morning of Saturday 12 December in your diaries now.

From 11am kids can take part in a range of fun activities – face painting, a bouncy castle, Lofty the Train, giveaways and a sausage sizzle – while grown ups can check out a variety of interesting stalls and displays including a pictorial history of Upper Hutt station.

The formalities will begin around 11.30am when the new station will be opened officially. This will include a blessing and the unveiling of a plaque. People can then tour the station building.

“We’ve got so much to celebrate with this fantastic new station” says Upper Hutt Regional Councillor Paul Swain. “It’s a total transformation from what was a very old, sad building to this stunning, bright, modern one. Taking a train or bus at Upper Hutt is now a really enjoyable experience and I’ve no doubt it will attract a lot more people onto public transport.”

“I know Upper Hutt residents join me in being proud of our new and improved gateway to the city,” says His Worship the Mayor, Wayne Guppy. “Visitors and residents alike are now greeted to our beautiful city with a station that matches the quality of what we have to offer in our vibrant region.

“Public transport is really important to Upper Hutt. A lot of people travel by train to Wellington to work and buses are used by hundreds of local residents every day. This station is a vital hub for the city.”

Special features of the station are its architectural exterior design that represents a train emerging from the tunnel; a light, modern waiting room and ticket office; a coffee kiosk that people can access from inside and outside; public toilets and sheltered seating right around the building and high quality CCTV cameras.

The new station was funded jointly by the NZ Transport Agency, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Upper Hutt City Council.
