Rejuvenation of Strathmore Park
Wellington City Council, along with Housing New Zealand and the New Zealand Police, is supporting a community-led rejuvenation of Strathmore Park.
The Strathmore Park community have been asked to identify strengths, challenges and opportunities for the suburb at recent community meetings and consultations.
Suggestions included:
• Projects which support the environment such as special housing, safe and connected walkways, improved bus routes, and urban rejuvenation;
• Spaces for communities including sporting and recreational facilities, retail and tourism opportunities and improved social services;
• Pathways to success such as a Trades school, social enterprises, early childhood facilities; and
• Community-driven events and programmes including Christmas In The Park, youth programmes, and community gardens.
Councillor Sarah Free, Community Facilities Portfolio Leader, says that a number of local projects are already underway and are strongly supported by many organisations and individuals.
“Strathmore Park is a fantastic part of Wellington with a lot of natural advantages, nevertheless, a coordinated approach to breathing new life into the area is needed. We want to work together with the community. Council, Housing New Zealand and the Police will support groups and members of the community who want to get involved and make projects happen”, she says.
Councillor Paul Eagle, Chair, Community Sport and Recreation Committee, says “this is about Strathmore Park and we are keen to see residents putting their hands up and getting involved”.
“It’s an opportunity for residents to make a real difference in their own backyard”.
Further consultation is planned during December. Residents can share ideas on how to improve Strathmore Park by:
• Emailing LoveStrathmorePark@gmail.com
• Coming along to Christmas In The Park at the Raukawa Reserve, Wednesday 9 December from 5.30pm. Ideas will be collected at an onsite events’ caravan;
• Visiting the community caravan, Raukawa Street carpark area, Strathmore Park, on 5, 9, and 12 December.
