Wellingtonians urged to secure their trailers

The Wellington Police District Car Squad was set up in February 2015 with a focus on targeting organised criminal groups linked to vehicle crime.
On Monday the 23rd of November 2015 the Car Squad arrested a male in Stokes Valley for the theft of a trailer.

While at the address the Car Squad recovered a second stolen trailer, which had been taken from small business owners, operating a lawn mowing and gardening business.

"The use of their trailer was fundamental in the day to day operation of their business," said Constable Brittany Allan of the District Car Squad.

"They were ecstatic to get the trailer back".

"The Car Squad has noticed an increase in the number of trailers stolen across the Wellington District in the last few months and we want to encourage all trailer owners take extra care in securing their trailers. "Trailers are vulnerable to theft as they are less likely to be afforded the same protection as motor vehicles.

Trailers are often left unsecured or poorly secured on residential front lawns or driveways and can be stolen relatively quickly and quietly," said Constable Allan.

To prevent the risk of trailer theft Police urge trailer owners to consider taking the following steps: • Park the trailer out of view • Position the trailer so the coupling is facing away from the road • Fit a hitch-coupler lock and/or wheel lock to the trailer • Use a chain or cable to secure the trailer to an immovable object • Remove one or all of the trailers wheels • Fit a GPS tracking device to the trailer Anyone with information that may assist the District Car Squad can contact Police on (04) 381 2000, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
