Hawkes’
Bay Regional Council has approved keeping bus fares for the
Napier and Hastings urban goBay service unchanged over the
next year.
A review of the bus fares showed that these are
sustainable for running the current services.
“The cost
of running the bus service is now lower, and I was strongly
supportive of holding fares as they are and continuing to
make it affordable for people to get around,” says Cr Alan
Dick, Chairman of the Transport Committee.
Passenger
numbers have dropped around 8% over the last year, this is
consistent with other centres where lower petrol prices have
moved some bus passengers back to using their cars more
often. However taking the bus is competitive with driving a
car, particularly for passengers travelling between the main
centres of Hastings and Napier.
“It’s good news for
Christmas shoppers and I am pleased we can hold these fares
through next year,” says Cr
Dick.
