Christmas for a Cause set to be a cracker of an event

Aucklanders have an opportunity to do something good for some of New Zealand’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged people at a cracker of an event - Christmas for a Cause.

The m.a.d.woman event is at the Ponsonby Community Centre on Saturday 12 December, where participants will be making bonbons, gifts and cards for long-term homeless, children in foster care, disadvantaged families and elderly people who could use support.

The initiative has been organised by Melina Schamroth, a former New Zealand journalist now based in Australia, who set up m.a.d.woman and the m.a.d.woman foundation to encourage, engage and inspire people to make a difference to their communities, environment and people in need.

“At this special Auckland event, we are working to bring people from the community together to create treats for some of the country’s most disadvantaged citizens at a time of year when some people have little opportunity to celebrate,” Schamroth says.

“This is a great chance to meet like-minded people and do something kind for others.

“Furthermore, taking time out to help someone else at this time of the year will actually improve your wellbeing.”

Schamroth says numerous global studies have shown that volunteering has real health benefits, including lower stress levels, fewer issues with depression and even lower blood pressure.

Schamroth is an international speaker, author and award-winning businesswoman who has helped more than 300,000 people here and in Australia.

That includes helping create meals for the hungry and homeless, and aiding thousands of others including survivors of Black Saturday bushfires, the Christchurch earthquake and Queensland floods, disabled and disadvantaged youth, long-term unemployed, children facing illness and more.

The event begins at 2pm, all materials needed will be provided and no special skills are required. All items will be distributed to disadvantaged New Zealanders supported by the Lifewise charity.
