Horotiu Motorcycle Fatality - Waikato

Horotiu Motorcycle Fatality - Waikato - Waikato

30 November 2015 As they work to establish the cause of a fatal weekend motorcycle crash, Waikato Police say one thing is clear; too many riders are losing their lives on the district’s roads. District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace, said the death of 37-year-old Hamilton man, Wayne Robert GOODMAN, who was on the roundabout near Koura Drive, Horotiu, on Saturday night was the 12th motorcycle fatality on Waikato roads this year. “Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash, near the Koura Dr off-ramp about 9.50pm following a collision between a car and Mr GOODMAN’s bike. “The crash is currently being investigated by the Waikato Serious Crash Unit so it’s too early to confirm what caused the collision but what I can confirm is that this incident could best be described as an avoidable tragedy.” Mrs Grace said while the investigation into Saturday’s fatality continues Police are working with partner agencies to establish what if anything can be done to address the wider issue of motorcycle safety. “This year we’ve seen people die in motorcycle crashes right across our district on gravel roads, urban streets and paved highways.

“On Saturday the rider was wearing a helmet, was well equipped and the headlight of his bike was on and working.

Though it was night time the intersection was well lit so it’s hard to put your finger on a single factor while in other crashes motorcycles and the riders haven’t always been fit for the road.” Mrs Grace said so far this year 38 people have died on Waikato roads and at this time of year their loss is particularly felt by families reflecting on an empty space at the Christmas table. “As we keep on saying, road safety is no accident.

It’s safe drivers and riders that will ensure safer families this summer and while Police will be doing our part to keep Waikato roads safe, we’re asking you play your part as well.” End
