Small bridge carries heavy weights

Small bridge carries heavy weights

A portable bridge system has been used as a solution for heavy vehicles travelling along East Cape Road.

“An inspection on the Horoera Bridge found one of the timber bridge beams was broken which meant we needed to put a weight restriction of 2 tonnes,” said General Manager for Tairawhiti Roads –Dave Hadfield.

“Farmers were unable to move stock on trucks and it also restricted camper vans from visiting East Cape light house.”

The bridge was installed in November similar in design to a ‘Bailey Bridge’ developed in World War II as a temporary bridge solution.

The bridge is one lane only and has a speed restriction of 30km/h.

“It is a temporary solution while we’re investigating the long term fix, which we don’t have a time frame for as yet,” says Mr Hadfield.

The portable bridge cost less than $100k and has a current weight limit of 44 tonnes or 100% of Class one vehicle.

Mayor Meng Foon is please see this project come to fruition

“The people and farming community really need good access. Thanks all the contractors, staff and Councillors who made this happen.”
