Relocation possible for pistol club

Council made a decision to meet some of the cost of the Gisborne Pistol Club relocating to a new site at Waerenga o Kuri.

The club have lodged a resource consent application to move to the new site on soil conservation land at Waerenga o Kuri, which is owned by the Crown and administered by Council.

Last year, Council evaluated the consent for the club’s current shooting ranges at Gaddum’s Hill.

Residential development in the area had led to various issues including noise complaints dating back to 2009.

Simon Benge from the Gisborne Pistol Club presented to councillors saying that they are trying to do the right thing by neighbours.

In April, Council had granted the club $10,000 to assist with investigating a relocation which has been used for specialist planning and technical advice in relation to the new site.

To meet requirements of a consent at the new site, the club requested that Council meet the costs of sealing a vehicle crossing and building a carpark at the new site, and also asked Council to act as guarantor for a $50,000 resource consent bond.

Mr Benge said the club would not be able to raise the bond and this would stop them from moving.

Council supported the move to the new location and agreed to assist with meeting the requirements of the consent.

A 24-year lease agreement would be negotiated for the new site.

Terry O’Neill presented on behalf of Gaddum’s Hill residents, he said the review process and searching for a new site has dragged on. He asked the Council to create a schedule and residents would like to see action taken.

“Council’s decision today has shown our commitment to getting this sorted for residents and the club,” said chief executive Judy Campbell.

The Gisborne Pistol Club have 29 members, Tairawhiti Police and Army personnel also use the club’s shooting range for training.
