Road to better inner harbour parking

Road to better inner harbour parking

Parking in the inner harbour has been addressed in the designs that are being finalised for the major capital upgrade in the area.

Chief executive Judy Campbell presented an update on the project’s progress at yesterday’s Council meeting (Thursday 17 December).

Ms Campbell says a count of the parking areas in the design has increased the number of spaces significantly.

“A concept design and visualisation for The Works boat and trailer park has been produced. We aim to consult with berth holders, boaties and Tatapouri Fishing Club on the design by the end of December.”

Ms Campbell said earlier this year Council was working to have the parking spaces completed before Christmas, however, before lodging a consent Council need to test the site to meet national environmental standards

Heritage New Zealand requires and archaeological assessment because the site has Waahi Tapu overlay,

“We’ll also engage further with iwi on the cultural impacts of the proposed trench work,” says Ms Campbell.

“We’re also investigating opportunities to upgrade services including water, stormwater and wastewater during the redevelopment as they are now at the end of their life.

“There is also potential for a full road upgrade.

“This means we won’t be able to get the parks in until the next financial year but it means that we can schedule it together with other infrastructure work – do it once and do it right.”
