Leisure pool at Pioneer closes for repair

Leisure pool at Pioneer closes for repair

The leisure pool at Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre will be closed from Monday 4 January – Friday 29 January for earthquake repairs.

Pioneer's lap pool and teach pool will remain open for swimmers, with the teach pool to be made available for casual leisure use by the public. The facility's spa, sauna and steam room will also be closed from 4–29 January for repairs and refurbishments.

The urgent repairs to the leisure pool will include replacement of damaged and displaced ceramic pool tiles and expansion joints, plus other remedial work that can be done during this period.

"Due to the effects of the earthquakes, a number of ceramic tiles are coming loose from the leisure pool tank below the waterline," says John Filsell, Christchurch City Council's Recreation and Sports Unit Manager.

"We've previously tried to fix the problem with temporary repairs, but these haven't been successful and we still have tiles coming loose, which is a health and safety issue for swimmers that needs to be addressed immediately. We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience, but encourage people to make use of the Council's outdoor pools, which only come into action in the summer and really boost the options for those who want to take a dip," Mr Filsell says.

Lane swimmers will be able to continue using the five-lane, 25-metre pool. The Learn to Swim programme will not be affected by the closure, with classes resuming on Monday 1 February.
