Hundreds participate at children's waterfront fun run

More than 400 children – the most ever - braved the inclement weather forecast and turned up at Frank Kitts Park for the Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run on December 16.

The annual event, in its third year, is held in conjunction with Sport Wellington and Athletics Wellington, with money raised going to Achilles International New Zealand. More than 50 of Athletics Wellington's teenage athletes ran alongside the kids on their 500m, 1km and 2km runs.

Cigna volunteers also ran a brilliant carnival alongside the event with face painting, spin the wheel, 'guess how many sweets in a jar' and popcorn and a BBQ to keep everyone fed. For Cigna staff it was their volunteer day with many out on the course cheering the kids on in their role as course marshals.

Athletic Wellington Sport Development Manager Jo Murray was pleased the rain stayed away, and plenty of kids wanted to get active.

“This was a fun event aimed at kids who like to be out and about and gives them a taste of the real thing - a great way to introduce children to the enjoyment of running on the waterfront!”

Eleven year-old Achilles Kids Ambassador and athlete, Jaden Movold, flew down from Auckland to speak with participants, as well as taking part in the 2km course on a special hand cycle, demonstrating that having a disability doesn't have to prevent anyone from taking part.

Jaden was born with a range of medical conditions including spina bifida and gets around in a wheelchair. Jaden is an athlete (swimming, triathlon, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair turbo touch, hand-cycling), and a Kapa Haka performer.

Achilles International NZ enables people with disabilities to compete alongside able-bodied athletes in local mainstream events as well as the high-profile international New York Marathon. Achilles helps to break down barriers for disabled athletes by setting up training programmes, coaching and guide support, and purchasing equipment such as, hand crank cycles and push rim wheelchairs.

Former World mountain running champion Melissa Moon presented medals for the top three place getters in each grade. All participating children received a certificate and a special prize from Cigna - a very cool 80s style headband.

Cigna and Sport Wellington are partners in the hugely successful Cigna Round the Bays event that is held in February each year.

Next year’s event is on February 21.
