Hutt the place to be this Christmas Eve

Hutt the place to be this Christmas Eve

It’s been a month of Christmas events in Lower Hutt with the grand finale of the festive season happening on Christmas Eve at the Walter Nash Centre.

From 3.30pm the Centre will become home to bouncy castles, Christmas crafts, circus workshops and more. The main man, Santa, will visit for free photographs and there will be carols from 5pm. Later in the evening at 6.30pm the Centre will become a cinema with a screening of the Christmas animated classic The Polar Express.

Council’s City Events Manager Carla Steed says this year’s Christmas offering has had a positive response with many people asking for the line-up to return next year.

“Starting with the annual Christmas parades in Petone and Wainuiomata there’s been at least two Christmas events happening every week. It's been fantastic to be able to spread the Christmas cheer across the month and see families have many more opportunities to take part in festivities this year.

"A first for 2015 were the pop-up carols. Nick Tansley and his band set up in their bright red trailer in parks across the valley. A highlight was the Waterloo event where more than 300 people turned out to sing along and enjoy the atmosphere in Trafalgar Square.

"We have the Eastbourne pop-up carols tonight, postponed from yesterday due to bad weather, and I'm sure we're going to get the same fantastic response, especially with Christmas just days away."

Eastbourne Pop-Up Carols: Wednesday 23 December from 6pm in Williams Park, Eastbourne.
Christmas Eve at the Movies: Thursday 24 December from 3.30pm at the Walter Nash Centre, Taita.
