Breakfast on offer for Cyclists on Go by Bike Day

Cyclists are being encouraged to attend the annual Go by Bike Breakfast to be held in Hastings Central Mall on Wednesday 10th February.

The breakfast is part of Go by Bike Day, a national event, held in February every year, where people switch from cars to bikes for a day.

Hastings Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says: “We want as many cyclists as possible to join in the fun and have breakfast with us between 7am and 8.30am. The Go by Bike Breakfast is for anyone who can ride a bike and it is great to see a number of Hastings schools encouraging their students to take part in a ride to the CBD before beginning their school day.”

Cynthia Bowers : “Go by Bike Day is a really good exercise opportunity. It would be great if everyone could leave the car at home and ride a bike to the shops, work or school on the day. We all need at least half-an-hour's exercise each day and this is a really good time to start a habit that may last a lifetime.”

“Cycling to work or school has many benefits. It gets you active and invigorated at the beginning of the day, helps keep you healthy and reduces traffic congestion. Cycling also reduces your petrol bill and carbon emissions,” Cynthia Bowers says.

The Go by Bike breakfast will also incorporate a bike ride from Flaxmere to the Hastings CBD. Councillor Henare O’Keefe will lead the ride which will include children from many Flaxmere schools. He says everyone is welcome to join in, just be at the splash pad at Flaxmere Park at 7am on Wednesday 10th February.

Cynthia Bowers says “I am looking forward to joining the ride from Flaxmere. Around 100 children join in making it a really exciting ride.”

Spot prizes will be given away during the morning and there will be breakfast for everyone who rides their bike to the Central Mall.
