Community invited to discuss future of Lions Community Park

Community invited to discuss future of Lions Community Park

A community barbecue is to be held at the Windsor Park Lions playground in Parkvale this Thursday, were the public will be invited to give their views on how to keep the area safe for all to use.

A replica of the iconic pirate ship that was destroyed at Splash Planet at Easter 2015 was installed at the playground late last year. The replica was attacked by vandals twice earlier this year and has been so badly damaged that it is currently surrounded by a safety fence and not available for children to play on.

Council is currently awaiting information from the insurance assessors and the company that manufactured the ship, as to whether it can be repaired or not.

A public meeting, involving Council staff, Police, Hastings Host Lions’ Club and members of the nearby community was held last week to find a way forward for the playground.

Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “The meeting was extremely positive and it is clear that something very powerful will happen as a result of this adversity. It is important that we all get behind the local community and support them.”

Cynthia Bowers says “We are collectively working together (Council, Lions, Police and the Community) to ensure the well-loved and popular park is maintained and used in a positive way.”

A community BBQ is being held at the Lions Community Park this Thursday (21 January) from 4-6pm. The Hastings Host Lions’ Club is providing free sausages, and Council staff and Police will be on site to provide resources and information to the community, and listen to ideas.
