Beach kites and free movies for SummerTimes hot days and nights

Animals surf the wind on Kite Day at New Brighton beach

This summer's Good Night Film Festival kicks off on Saturday 23 January at 6pm with a screening of Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit in the Halswell Quarry.

One of SummerTimes favourites, the Good Night Film Festival will run this weekend and next weekend, featuring The Lego Movie, The Adventures of Tintin and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

With pre-show entertainment at 6pm and the movies starting at 7pm, it's a great way to spend an evening rugged up under the stars. Entry is by gold coin donation and the venues are also Barnett Park and the Botanic Gardens. Check all the details at summertimes.co.nz

Next week on Saturday 30 January, colourful kites will flutter and soar aloft on Kite Day at New Brighton beach.

Kite Day is a free annual Christchurch City Council SummerTimes event that runs from 1.30pm to 4.30pm on the south side of New Brighton Pier.

Kite lovers from around the world will converge on New Brighton Beach to fly, share and delight in their fantastic creations.

There are spot prizes for children with kites, and the New Brighton Silver Band will play in the amphitheatre.
