Boaties rewarded for getting on board with the rules

3 February 2016

It’s always nice to be acknowledged for doing the right thing, and that’s exactly what the Bay of Plenty Maritime Team are doing in the Rotorua Lakes area thanks to their local Burger Fuel joint. They are recognising those who have been following the maritime safety rules and are being safe on the water.

Each summer the Regional Council’s Maritime Team, and their group of harbour wardens, patrol popular waterways to help educate people about the rules and offer advice about safe boating. Burger Fuel decided to come on board as a sponsor after learning about this programme.

“With so many people using the Rotorua Lakes for a variety of recreational activities it’s important that everyone knows the rules and respects other users. We have been fortunate to be able to reward that good behaviour, with vouchers, thanks to Burger Fuel”, says Senior Maritime Officer Ross Powell.

Another tool the Regional Council is using to promote being safe on the water is their new ‘Boating in the Bay of Plenty’ booklet – a 'one stop shop' resource that educates people about how to be safe on the water.

This resource is available at all Regional Councils Rotorua, Whakatane, Tauranga and Mount offices says Mr Powell and copies have been ‘flying out the door.‘

To check out the online version of this booklet visit: www.boprc.govt.nz/harbourmaster or pop into one of their offices to grab a copy for yourself.
