Artwork designs sought for Solway Park toilet block

Artwork designs sought for Solway Park toilet block

Designs are being sought for artwork to decorate the outer walls of the new public toilet block at Solway Park in Levin.

Horowhenua District Council’s Property and Parks manager Arthur Nelson says the project is designed to add more vibrancy to Solway Park in the south-east corner of Levin’s urban area.

“We are already seeing the park used more, by local families and also for community events such as the upcoming festival of international foods on 27 February,” he said.

“This improvement is a result of great collaboration between local residents, the Neighbourhood Policing Team and Council, and it reflects the ongoing aspirations everyone has for the area.”

Mr Nelson said that throughout New Zealand there are many public toilet blocks adorned by magnificent artworks that reflect their local area.

“We can achieve something similar for Solway park, so we encourage artists to look for inspiration in addition to their own creativity.”

The criteria for artwork designs includes that all must be colourful and feature sport or culture. Submitting artists will be required to paint the artwork themselves, therefore they must have the ability to replicate their artwork on a larger scale. Artists must also be willing to mentor a student throughout the painting process.

Each design must be A3 landscape and be submitted to Horowhenua District Council by 5pm on Friday 19 February, after which a judging panel will select the best designs.

Artwork designs can be delivered in hard copy to Council’s Levin office at 126 Oxford Street, otherwise emailed torecordsprocessing@horowhenua.govt.nz.
