Fatal crash - train v cyclist

At about 8.09am this morning (11/02/16) Police received a report that a male cyclist had been hit by a train at the level crossing on Fendalton Avenue, Christchurch.

As a result the male cyclist has died from his injuries. The train was travelling South from Papanui towards Blenheim Road.

It is unconfirmed at this stage which direction the cyclist was riding.

Indications are that the barrier arms and signals were working at the time.

Police Serious Crash and other specialist units are in attendance and the matter will be referred through to the Coroner. Traffic Management is in place with Fendalton Road closed between Idris Road and Harper Avenue.

This closure will be in place for some time and it is recommended that people plan their journey to avoid this area. Senior Sergeant Vaughn Lapslie, Canterbury District Command Centre.
