HBRC Maori Committee holding meeting in Wairoa

HBRC Maori Committee holding meeting in Wairoa

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Maori Committee will be holding its first meeting of the year in Wairoa on Monday.

The committee meets bi-monthly and consists of three councillors and 12 Maori members representing the four Taiwhenua of Wairoa, Tamatea, Heretaunga and Ahuriri. Its role is to represent Maori at the council table, while taking part in relevant decision-making and policy development and advising Council on dealing with particular issues affecting tangata whenua in particular.

The committee traditionally meets at the council chamber in Napier, but members, who represent Maori from throughout the region, were keen to see the committee meet in other centres around the bay.

Wairoa was chosen for Monday’s meeting as there are a number of issues the committee wants to consider from the area, including the silt discharge issue at the Waihi Dam and Wairoa River flooding issues.

The public meeting starts at 10.15am at the Wairoa Taiwhenua, 46 Marine Parade, Wairoa. All marae representatives and members of the public are welcome.

There are plans for future Maori Committee meetings to be held in other parts of the region later this year.
