Passionate dog owners speak at hearings
Passionate dog owners speak at
hearings
The Dog Control Policy and Bylaw
review hearings brought in passionate dog owners from around
the District to speak on behalf of their beloved
hounds.
The hearing was an opportunity for people to speak to their submission and answer any questions from elected members.
Thirty-eight of the 429 submitters chose to speak at the hearing, including one dog carried by her owner in a sling-type baby carrier.
Although the speakers represented only a small proportion of submitters, a common topic was area specific rules. Most were happy with the restriction times and dates on beaches and Council reserves, as well as sharing with the non-dog owners and wildlife.
Council staff were applauded for their work with the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the dedication to protecting wildlife in the district. A call for more consistent signage at beaches between our Council and DOC to avoid confusion was another topic covered at the hearings.
The deliberations will take place on the 17 March Judicial Committee Meeting and then on to Council for adoption on 18 May. The new Dog Control Bylaw will be in place before summer 2016-17.
