Sportsafe ARL Nines Return to Whitianga

AUCKLAND RUGBY LEAGUE

The Sportsafe Auckland Rugby League (ARL) Nines are set to return to Whitianga next weekend February 26-27, 2016 after proving to be a popular event in 2015.

The beach, sun and top class footy were all showcased at last year's tournament - affirmation for the returning occasion.

Auckland Premiership teams will battle for bragging rights and the Nines trophy when they go head to head down at Lyon Park. However, it's not all about the Auckland sides with Ngaruawahia coming into the mix to represent the Waikato region.

The six teams confirmed to compete in the tournament are defending champions Papakura Sea Eagles, Manurewa Marlins, Howick Hornets, Otara Scorpions, Glenora Bears and Ngaruawahia.

The 2016 Sportsafe ARL Nines will be conducted in accordance with Rugby League Laws of the Game with specific modifications which include nine minute halves and a total of nine players whom must be on the field at any one time.

All teams will play each other in the qualifying pool with the top three teams going through to the championship section and the bottom three into the plate. From there, each team will play each other once with the two highest qualifiers playing in the grand final.

Whitianga proved to be a big hit with players last season, providing an ideal venue for footy and fun - an environment that allows players and team staff to involve families. It is also an opportunity for rugby league clubs to showcase their talents outside of Auckland.

Players will have the chance to win prizes including the use of a brand new car, courtesy of ARL sponsors Nissan Giltrap. Colman's Suzuki are also giving a player the chance to earn the use of a brand new Boulevard M109 Motorbike for the weekend.

In addition to these, Monaco Corporation Limited will have G- Shock watches up for grabs.

ARL sponsorship and events manager Troy Hardy said this year's tournament will be bigger and brighter.

"The feedback we received from last year's tournament was fantastic," he says.

“The players, team staff and fans all enjoyed themselves, and Whitianga proved an ideal venue.

"If you're after watching some of the best domestic rugby league in the country, make sure you get down to Lyon Park next weekend.

"We look forward to the occasion of playing riverside in beautiful Whitianga again."

Games will kick off on Friday afternoon at 3pm with the last game scheduled for 8pm. Plate and championship rounds will continue on Saturday kick-off at 11am with food and drinks available off the field.

Live streaming of the event will be available for those who are unable to attend and support their sides.
