Barnardos There for Support on Christchurch Quake Anniversary

Barnardos New Zealand is encouraging children and families to reach out for support if they’re feeling anxious around the upcoming anniversary of 2011’s Canterbury earthquake.

Barnardos’ operations manager Karen Billings says their 0800 What’s Up children’s helpline has been experiencing an increase in calls following the Valentine’s Day quake and know children may already be feeling vulnerable.

“Our 0800 What’s Up Counsellors experienced a rush of calls in 2011 when the big quake hit, so we understand the anniversary could bring up distressing memories for young people.”

“A traumatic event like an earthquake can have a lasting impact on young people and feelings of anxiousness is quite normal and we’re here for them if they need to talk.”

Barnardos also offers a free earthquake support coordination service for families affected by the Canterbury earthquakes.

The service helps families to work out a tailor-made plan with school or childcare help, earthquake-related housing, EQC and insurance help, heating and repairs, and much more.
