Two sets of safety improvements on SH1 Whangarei

MEDIA RELEASE

29 February 2016 | NORTHLAND

Two sets of safety improvements on SH1 Whangarei

The NZ Transport Agency is beginning work this week to improve safety and traffic flows at two locations on SH1 into Whangarei.

Traffic signals will be upgraded at the Rewa Rewa Road intersection on SH1 at the Northern entrance to Whangarei.

The changes will make it safer for traffic turning right out of Rewa Rewa Road and onto Otaika Road (SH1). It will also make it easier and safer for motorists entering SH1 from Tauroa Street by creating longer gaps in the northbound traffic flows.

Temporary traffic signals will be used while the construction is completed, which is expected to take up to eight weeks.

The road shoulder will be closed during the day which may slow traffic through the area. Motorists are advised to allow plenty of time for their journey.

Safety improvements are also being made further north on SH1 heading into Whangarei at the Otaikashops to make it safer for pedestrians.

New traffic islands will be installed to make them more prominent and provide safer movements for pedestrians during the day and at night. Lighting and signage will also be improved.

The road surface will be re-laid at the same time to maximise the benefits to customers during the one set of works.

The work will mostly be carried out at night to reduce any delays for motorists.
