Temporary warning for untreated wastewater

A temporary warning is being put up on city beaches.

223 cubic meters of wastewater wasn’t treated at the wastewater treatment plant before it was released through the outfall pipe.

An average of 15,000 cubic meters of wastewater is treated and then pumped 1.8km through the outfall pipe into the bay every day.

The release was due to a mechanical fault at the treatment plant.
The warning is a precaution asking people to avoid swimming and gathering seafood from Midway and Waikanae beaches. The rivers have not been affected.

The amount is highly diluted but the warning signage will remain in place over the next 5 days.
