Latest Controlled Purchase Operation brings good result

Northland DHB and NZ Police staff who conducted two Controlled Purchase Operations at licensed premises throughout Northland over the weekend are pleased with the result.

During the two operations, the underage volunteers aged 16 and 17 years attempted to purchase alcohol from licensed premises in the greater Whangarei, Mid North and Hokianga areas. The operations resulted in NO sales from the 24 outlets tested by the enforcement agencies.

Sergeant Howard CLEMENT, Alcohol Harm Reduction Officer, Whangarei Police said, “The result was heartening. The DHB and Police had been running joint Controlled Purchase Operations in Northland for ten years now and it appears the Whangarei premises tested in this operation have appropriate systems in place to prevent a sale of alcohol to minors which is great”.

Senior Constable Graeme WRIGHT, Alcohol Harm Reduction Officer, Kerikeri Police said, “This is another very positive result. We were encouraged to find that at some licensed premises in this area, the young volunteers were asked for identification immediately on entering the premises rather than at the checkout. This proactive approach is excellent. The simple test of asking for identification ensures best practice for premises to prevent sales to minors each time they serve young people.

It also shows our off-licensed premises are responsible holders of a liquor license and therefore protecting the young people in the communities they operate in”.
