Green light for Queenstown's First traffic signals

Queenstown’s first set of traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Stanley and Ballarat Streets, with work set to begin next week.

The signals are the first of two sets of lights to replace roundabouts in downtown Queenstown and are being installed in a joint initiative between QLDC and the NZ Transport Agency.

Mayor Vanessa van Uden and Tony Sizemore, the Transport Agency’s Transport Planning Manager, said that increased pedestrian safety, particularly given the continued growth of the district, was the primary reason for the change.

The lights will also improve traffic flows and reduce congestion at peak periods.

Next week’s work involves trenching and laying ducts for cabling across the intersections, and other minor works. The installation of the lights will begin after Easter, along with changes to kerbs, gutters and crossing points. To make room for the signals and altered road layout, five diagonal carparks on the northeast side of Ballarat will change to two parallel parks.

The lights are due to start operating in mid April, with the roundabout remaining operational until then.
