Fresh warning after heavy Coromandel rain

Fresh warning after heavy Coromandel rain

Waikato Regional Council staff have been out and about checking what impact the torrential rain has had overnight and this morning on the Coromandel.

“They're contacting landowners and inspecting local streams and rivers, largely around Whitanga and Tairua,” said duty regional flood co-ordinator Adam Munro.

Road access into Whitianga was temporarily cut off by flooding but is now available again.

However, the council's regional hazards team notes there's a warning for more heavy rain this afternoon and into this evening.

“That means there is again a risk of flooding on the peninsula that may be exacerbated by a high tide mid this afternoon which could prevent swollen streams and rivers draining quickly,” said Mr Munro.

“Residents are warned to look out for surface flooding on roads, slips and the potential for rapidly rising waterways. We'll update any advice as the situation warrants.”
