Support for tackling poverty

Council will support a TacklingPovertyNZ workshop to be held in Gisborne later this year.

The workshop will start a discussion around poverty in Gisborne and establishing a network of interested minds and organisations.

"Council's involvement is one way of supporting community led development,” says planning and development group manager Nedine Thatcher-Swann.

TacklingPovertyNZ initiative is a collaboration between the New Zealand Treasury and the McGuinness Institute to help improve the material, economic and holistic wellbeing of New Zealand's diverse communities.

The McGuiness Institute sought funding and staff support from Council to host the workshop in Gisborne as part of their TacklingPovertyNZ Workshop Tour.

The objective of the local workshops is to produce discussion papers and videos that are presented to Treasury to identify local issues and possible solutions related to poverty.

Representatives on the Gisborne District Youth Council attended a national workshop in December, which gathered perspectives on poverty from young people from around the country, who presented their findings to ministers at parliament.

Each local workshop includes speakers and participants from the December workshop, presentations about progress and discussion to date and guided discussion on local poverty issues and solutions.
