Public Health Warning Lifted

Marine Biotoxin in Shellfish – Northland West Coast

Lifting of Public Health Warning: Marine Biotoxin in Shellfish – Northland west coast area between Pouto Point on the north head of the Kaipara Harbour, to the south head of the Hokianga Harbour

Northland District Health Board’s Public Health Unit advises the public that monitoring of shellfish samples from the Northland West Coast area; between Pouto Point on the north head of the Kaipara Harbour to the south head of Hokianga Harbour, has shown a reduction in the levels of toxin that can cause PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning) to below regulatory levels.

The public are therefore advised that the warning, issued on 3 March 2016, against taking shellfish from the Northland west coast area, has now been lifted.

The public is reminded that if in doubt about the safety of shellfish they have previously gathered from the above area, they should contact the Public Health Unit. Anyone who becomes ill after eating shellfish should consult their doctor.

Northland DHB will continue to monitor the situation and advise of any changes.

Members of the public with queries about this information or shellfish safety should call Whangarei Hospital 09 430 4100 and request the on call Health Protection Officer.
