Wellington restaurants invite returned service men and women to eat for free this ANZAC Day.

ANZAC Day celebrates and honours those who have served New Zealand and Australia in military operations. For the fifth year running, a group of Wellington restaurants are honouring returned servicemen and women who have served abroad by inviting them to enjoy a complimentary meal on ANZAC Day, Monday 25th April.

Boulcott Street Bistro, Monsoon Poon and Osteria del Toro would like to recognise the many New Zealanders who have served abroad, and say thank you. These Wellington restaurants will be open for dinner from 5pm on Monday 25 April and extend the offer of a free meal to New Zealand service men and women who have served overseas on combat, combat-like or peace keeping, making or enforcement operations.

After seeing a similar concept in the United States and talking to customers Monsoon Poon’s Mike Egan brought the tribute to New Zealand in 2012.

“Many restaurants throughout the United States honour their service men and women in a similar style with ‘Veterans Dine for Free’. It has proven to be a well respected event, with a great response,” Mr Egan says.

“A few of our guests [at Monsoon Poon] were once stationed at the NZ Army base in Singapore and love Southeast Asian food, so I thought we’d invite them to dine as an acknowledgement of their service,”

“Since 2012, we’ve had a number of returned service men and women enjoy the ANZAC Day offer. I hope the word continues to spread and that we will see more this year,” says Mr Egan.

Boulcott Street Bistro, Monsoon Poon and Osteria del Toro are open for 5pm dinner this ANZAC Day, Monday 25th April.
