Calling for nominations of Upper Hutt Community Groups

Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards are now open for nominations.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 14 APR 2016—Nominations are now open for the 2016 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards. The awards recognise the work of community groups in the Wellington region by rewarding the valuable contribution made by volunteers.

“Each year we are blown away by the innovative and thoughtful groups in our community. Their volunteers sacrifice valuable personal time to work tirelessly for their cause. It is fantastic that we are able to acknowledge and reward their commitment,” said Jo Maxwell Community Awards Manager, Wellington Airport

Last year’s region-wide nominations grew more than 50% over the previous year.

“The increase in nominations is testament to the passionate work that Wellington Airport, Wellington Community Trust and the local Councils have put in to these awards.” said Jo Maxwell.

The awards begin at the municipal level with the region’s five councils awarding volunteer organisations in their local community under the following categories: Art & Culture, Education and Youth Development, Health and Wellbeing, Heritage and Environment, and Sport and Leisure. A Rising Star award is also given to recognise and encourage emerging and grass-roots groups doing great things in the community.

The finalists from each locality then go forward to the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards in association with Wellington Community Trust for the overall award in their category. Each council selects a Supreme Award finalist to vie for the Regional Supreme Award.

Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy is a strong advocate of the awards, noting the tireless effort so many community volunteers put in, that in-turn increases the vitality of the city.

“We understand the importance of these groups,” said Mr Guppy. “The investment these people make is adding value and strength to our community. These awards are one way of saying ‘Thanks, we appreciate all that you do!’”

Last year, Expressions Whirinaki Arts and Entertainment Centre won the Supreme Award for Upper Hutt in August. Earthlink Incorporated won the Regional Supreme Award at last year’s regional awards held in November.

Nominations are open until 31 May 2016. Any not-for-profit group or organisation working in the interests of the community can be nominated—including groups who use professionals to support the delivery of services undertaken by volunteers.
