Capital’s cycling plans inspected for rapid delivery
The Wellington City Council is partnering with the New Zealand Transport Agency to conduct an independent review of the Capital’s cycling plan.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says that with increasing numbers of cyclists in Wellington, coupled with significant investments in cycling infrastructure led by the Council and Central Government, it was important to secure the investment.
“The Wellington City Council is committed to transforming our transport network so people can move safely and efficiently on foot, on bikes, in buses or in cars,” she says.
“We are working closely with NZTA and Minister Simon Bridges to secure the cycling investment for Wellington and ensure our cycling framework is delivered in a timely fashion.”
On Friday 8 April, Mayor Wade-Brown and NZTA representatives discussed engaging Morrison Low to assess Wellington City Council’s cycling infrastructure planning for the fit with the strategic network and ability to deliver quick wins.
“Minister Bridges confirmed to Mayor Wade-Brown this week that he remains eager for cycling infrastructure delivery in the Capital.
“We all want the most effective and least controversial options,” says Mayor Wade-Brown. “Modern, progressive cities provide safe cycling infrastructure. In a recent survey, over three quarters of respondents said they would cycle more if it were safer.”
In June 2015 councillors voted unanimously to adopt the Wellington Cycling Framework.
