Paint the cells

Local artists are set to overhaul the Manukau Police Station holding cells this month.

Ten people were selected to paint their winning design following a competition in December last year.

A panel of Judges, including the Minister of Police, Hon Judith Collins, and local Kaumatua Brownie Rauwhero selected the winning designs.

Some of the artists include students from Papatoetoe High School, a Police officer, as well as professional and novice artists.

The idea came from Inspector Tracy Phillips, who felt it was time to make a darker place brighter.

“We want to make a better environment for the staff who work in the District Custody Unit and for those who unfortunately end up spending time there.”

“Artists have come up with inspirational paintings which reflects the diverse community of Counties Manukau.

We hope while people are in our care, they can have time to reflect in an environment which shows that someone cares about them.”

The initiative is part of a larger project in the cells, where Counties Manukau Police have set up a library of donated books.

This is to give detainees something constructive to do while they are waiting.

All of the artwork is expected to be completed by mid-May.
