Sonic Wells – backdrop to Historical Sister City agreement

Sonic Wells – backdrop to Historical Sister City agreement

The opening of Sonic Wells for Gallipoli – interactive installations that will connect New Zealand, Australia and Turkey with a real-time audio link – will coincide with the signing of an agreement to forge an Historic Sister City relationship between Çanakkale, Turkey and Wellington, New Zealand.

The three Sonic Wells in Wellington, Sydney and Çanakkale will transmit audio clear enough for people in different cities to be able to hold conversations.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown and Turkish Ambassador Say will speak through the well with their counterparts in Sydney, Australia and Çanakkale, Turkey at the opening at 5.30pm, Saturday 23 April.

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will formally cement the Historic City relationship with Çanakkale, commemorating the World War I centenary and honouring the friendship and strong historic links between our cities.

Artist Allan Giddy, grandson of a New Zealand Anzac, is looking forward to being able to connect Turks, New Zealanders and Australians.

The signing of the MOU and Sonic Wells is the developing story of three nations brought together by adversity, who have since forged strong links and continue to build a history together.
