Connecting people in Wellington’s Eastern Suburbs

NEWS RELEASE
22 April 2016

Connecting people in Wellington’s Eastern Suburbs – have your say from Tuesday 26 April

Wellington City Council wants to hear your views on creating safer and easier connections for people cycling and walking in the eastern suburbs.

A Council-community working group, set-up in late 2015, has been looking at possible connections. The working group is made up of people representing local organisations like schools, residents’ associations and business improvement districts, local ward councillors, the Automobile Association, Cycle Aware, Living Streets and representatives from the NZ Transport Agency and Greater Wellington Regional Council.

The working group looked at key destinations in the east – identifying and prioritising eight potential corridors in the area.

From the eight potential corridors, the key areas being considered are Kilbirnie to Miramar, and Kilbirnie to Seatoun.

Possible route options in the Kilbirnie to Miramar corridor are:
- Cobham option – along Rongotai Road and across Cobham Drive

- Hobart option – along Rongotai Road, Coutts Street, under the airport via the subway and along Hobart Street.

Possible route options in the Kilbirnie to Seatoun corridor are:
- Broadway option – along Rongotai Road, Coutts Street, under the airport via the subway, along Broadway and Dundas Street-

- Strathavon option – along Rongotai Road, Coutts Streets, under the airport via the subway, along quiet streets to Strathmore Park, then along Broadway and Ludlam Street.

Now we want to hear from the community whether these are the best or most-preferred options. The Council’s Chair of the Transport and Urban Development Committee, Cr Andy Foster, says although a lot of the initial work has been done by the working group to get to this point, it’s now the public’s turn to help make the best decision.

“Everyone is encouraged to go online – cycleways.wellington.govt.nz – to have their say. We’ll be holding public drop-in sessions at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie on Wednesday 4 May from 4.30pm-7.30pm and then on Saturday 7 May from 9am-3pm.”

“Recommendations on the routes will go to the working group and then the Transport and Urban Development Committee in June. Councillors will then make decisions based on community feedback before we do the detailed design work,” says Cr Foster.

“Depending on what happens at that Committee, the public will have another chance to have their say in October/November on the details of preferred routes – how roads and footpaths should be laid out and treated to make cycling safer. And once preferred routes have been identified, the plan is to have the work finished by mid-2018.”

Consultation starts on Tuesday 26 April and closes on 23 May.
