Severe west to southwest gales are forecast to hit coastal parts of Southland, Clutha and Dunedin today. The strongest winds are expected from Bluff to the Otago Peninsula. Gales are likely to become severe for a time from late this afternoon gusting 120km/h. “We advise people to take care on the roads in these areas, and tie down any unsecured structures,” said meteorologist Emma Blades. “Winds of this strength have the potential to damage trees and make for hazardous driving conditions, especially for tall sided vehicles and motorcycles,” Ms Blades added.

The strong winds will unfortunately pick up again in the far south again on Monday, but the rest of the country will have great weather for Anzac Day, barring showers for the west and south of the South Island. “With a southwest flow over the country, early morning temperatures will be cold, so do wrap up for the dawn service,” Ms Blades commented.

The second week of the school holidays is going to be another stunner as a ridge of high pressure builds over the country. Sunshine and a northwest flow means temperatures will start to pick up again mid-week, with daytime maximums reaching the low twenties for many.
