Major milestone for Lichfield Street parking building

A major step forward for the city-centre rebuild has been taken with the award of the design and build tender for the Lichfield Street parking building.

Construction of the car park is due to start in July with a consortium led by Clearwater Construction and including DHC Consulting, DH Steel Construction and MAP Architects winning the contract.

Steffan Thomas, Christchurch City Council Transport Operations Manager, says the parking building will provide 804 parking spaces and 953 square metres of retail space.

The parking building will have a number of features:
· connections to Ballantynes and the Guthrey Centre
· electronic signage on the availability of parks – green and red lights will show users which parks are available
· electric charging for motor vehicles and bicycles
· an automated security system
· a larger retail area activating Plymouth Lane and Lichfield Street

"We were pleased with the quality of the tenders, and the addition of this new technology ensures that the car park will be set up to cater for parking needs well into the future," says Mr Thomas.

"Parking will be an increasingly significant issue as the number of people living, working and shopping in the city centre continues to increase. It is excellent to have a key piece of parking infrastructure under way to meet these needs."

"The Lichfield Street parking building will mark key progress for Christchurch's city centre, as it will support the retail core of the city," says Mr Thomas. "It is an important part of the Christchurch Central Parking Plan, which lays out the parking strategy for the city centre, and it is great to see this plan coming to fruition."

The project is expected to be completed in mid-2017.
