Latest fatal crash for Waikato is the 18th for the district for 2016

This morning’s fatal crash in the Waikato was reported just after 6.00am, with initial indications that a south bound truck has crossed the centreline and collided with a northbound car. Police can confirm that a male, who was the driver of the car, died at the scene, and two passengers have been taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition. The truck driver was also taken to Waikato Hospital, his condition is not described as serious. Police extend their sympathies to the family of the deceased man.

The Police Serious Crash Unit are at the scene and are conducting a scene examination to establish cause, and this will be ongoing. Police are calling for witnesses who may have seen both vehicles on SH27 at 6.00am, in particular they are asking for the driver of a white utility, who was following the truck at this time to come forward.

Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace says “Prevention First is the key message from Police as this latest fatal crash is reported. This is the eighteenth fatal crash for the Waikato District that has resulted in the loss of 24 lives. Police are asking drivers to really think about driving as a safety exercise, which is no different to any other activity that involves risk. It is so important to ensure that you and your vehicle are fit for the journey, this is about ensuring we think ‘prevention first’ before we start the journey; is our vehicle in good condition, are we, as drivers in good condition - not fatigued, starting out tired, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or distracted by other things going on”. Ensuring we are ready, as well as our vehicles, is just as important as the actual driving. Once on the road it is important to stick to the rules, they are designed to keep us safe and always exercise patience and consideration for others, she says.
