Donations gratefully accepted

Donations gratefully accepted – now at a petrol station near you!

With an ever increasing number of calls coming in to the Regent Theatre from Dunedin’s generous donors as the Star Regent 24-Hour Book Sale draws near, it is now even easier for people to drop off their book donations.

There are now marked wheelie bins placed at five petrol stations around the city:

- BP North
- BP Cumberland Street
- BP Mornington
- BP Mosgiel
- Port Chalmers Motors

The bins are emptied regularly, with the book sorters constantly amazed by Dunedin people’s willingness to support its institutions.

Book Sale Convener Alison Cunningham says, “Every year, we are almost overwhelmed with the donations for this sale. At this time of year, we find the number of calls from people wondering where they can bring books increases dramatically, sometimes up to half a dozen a day.

“It is such a crucial fundraising event for the Theatre and we think we have a degree of responsibility to make it easy for the people who support us so generously.”

For those who use the wheelie bins, for the ease of the volunteers who will empty them, please bag books where possible, and to honour the generosity of the businesses who are lending their space, please ensure all items are securely inside the bin and any rubbish picked up.

Books can also be dropped off to the Regent Box Office during usual open hours. Large loads can be taken directly to Roslyn Mill storage on Kaikorai Valley Road on Sunday mornings between 9.30am and 12 noon (go up the staircase at the side of the building nearest the roundabout, next door to Morlite Aluminium), or to arrange collection, call the Box Office on 477 8597.

The Star Regent 24-Hour Book Sale starts at noon on Friday 10th June and finishes at noon on Saturday 11th June.

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
