Burglary, unlawful taking, pursuit... - Auckland motorways - Waitemata

Police were called to a burglary at the Greenhithe Liquor Centre in Greenhithe Road, Greenhithe just after midnight.

About half an hour later a Henderson police unit saw a stolen car citybound on the Western Motorway.

The car had been reported stolen at half past midnight.

The stolen car was followed to New Windsor area where it was succesfully spiked.

It carried on to the motorway on-ramps at Maioro Road where it entered the northbound lane, heading south.

Police followed the car in the correct lane.

The stolen car went off the South Western Motorway at Neilson St and went into Onehunga before returning to the motorway and heading north in the southbound lane.

After driving north for a short distance it U-turned and stated heading south over the Mangere Bridge.

It stayed on the motorway followed by police vehicles at relatively low speeds, (75 km/h on the motorway), and came off the motorway again at Puhinui Road. During the pursuit the occupants of the vehicle were throwing bottles of liquor towards the police cars following.

The vehicle was followed into Otara where it drove around Clover Park before again entering the motorway at Te Irirangi Drive, driving north in the southbound lane at low speeds, (40 km/h).

The vehicle again U-turned back towards Te Irirangi Drive, where it was blocked in by police vehicles.

The 5 occupants were arrested.

They ranged in age from 15 to 17 years old and were all from Otara.

Property located in the stolen car indicates that they were responsible for the burglary at the liquor shop.
