Whitireia Park dog walkers wanted poo bins – we listened.

Three new dog poo bins are now available at Onehunga Bay in Whitireia Park.

“Park users told us they love the fact the park provides them with many opportunities for dog walking and supporting this was the need for people to be able to get rid of their dog poo”, says Councillor Barbara Donaldson, Chair of the Whitireia Park Board and GWRC’s Environment Committee.

“We’re very pleased to be able to provide bins for dogs and their people to use.”

The need for dog poo bins was frequently raised during consultation for the Whitireia Park Management Plan, which was recently approved by the Whitireia Park Board. This plan guides the development and care of the park for the next 10 years.

Upcoming work in Whitireia Park also includes the redevelopment of the Kaitawa Pou car park and ongoing ecological weed management on the coastal escarpments to protect and enhance the recovery of local native plants in this Porirua jewel.

Whitireia Park is a headland with commanding views over Mana Island, Porirua Harbour and its surrounding area. The park comprises around 180 hectares of predominantly open space grasslands with a remnant patch of native bush. The park is governed by a Park Board, with equal representation from Ngati Toa Rangatira and Greater Wellington Regional Council. GWRC undertakes day-to-day management of the park and reports regularly to the Park Board.

Whitireia Park provides leisure activities such as dog walking, fishing, mountain biking, horse riding, rock climbing and walking. The park also provides a special opportunity for people to undertake a variety of activities in or on the water including swimming, kite surfing and diving. It contains outstanding wetlands and birdlife.
