Huge new toys for toddlers in the city

The Big Blue Blocks are here!

Little ones will be centre of attention this Friday (May 13) as they gather in Albert Square to have a first play with the city’s latest attraction; massive blue foam blocks.

The invitation has gone out to pre-schoolers to grab their parents and head to the square for the unveiling of The Imagination Playground, a massive set of large blocks, tubes and connectors that are portable, flexible and light enough for even small arms to lift.

The idea behind it is to unlock children’s creative spirit and add life and vibrancy to the Hastings city centre, said Hastings deputy mayor Cynthia Bowers.

“These little ones are the shoppers of our future and their mums and dads are our shoppers of today. This is our way of helping make their time in the city centre as much fun as we can, to help encourage them to come into town more often and stay longer.

“As well as benefitting our retailers, there are real gains to be had from encouraging our residents to gather in the heart of our district and have some fun together.”

The launch party, from 11am to 2pm this Friday in Albert Square, will feature live music, free healthy snacks for the kids and, of course, play time with the blocks.

A Hastings District Council plan to increase vibrancy in the city centre was put together in October. The plan has seen a bunch of new initiatives thrive in the city, from live entertainment in Albert Park to Christmas Trees lining the streets in the run up to the festive season.

“We have great momentum and collaboration that is showing real results for the city centre”, said Susan McDade, Hastings City Business Association general manager.

“Our members and Council have a real willingness to make tangible differences in the city centre. The Imagination Playground is just one of these ideas that has been brought to life thanks to the vibrancy plan and I for one can’t wait to have a play.”
