Resurfacing work next week on The Parade

A 300-metre section of The Parade in Island Bay, between Tamar and Avon streets, is to be resurfaced next week.

Wellington City Council’s Chief Planning Officer, David Chick, says the road surface is deteriorating and so a decision has been made to carry out the resurfacing before winter.

The work (weather permitting) is scheduled to start on Monday 23 May and will take about three days to complete.

Mr Chick says it was originally intended to hold off the resurfacing work until reviews on the layout, safety and performance of the new Island Bay cycleway had been completed – however there are concerns the surface will break up over winter. “So we’re aiming to get in and do the work before temperatures drop too much for the effective laying of asphalt.”

When the paving is complete the road will be repainted with the existing cycle lane and parking layout.
