This Queens' Birthday weekend is the very first Mercury Bay Music Festival, which is being held in Whitianga. A handful of the visiting artists that are performing over the weekend are also hosting practical, hands-on skills workshops at the Mercury Bay Area School

• Richard Gilewitz Guitar Masterclass - Richard Gilewitz will be conducting a special fingerstyle acoustic guitar workshop Aimed at intermediate players, it will benefit players who are comfortable with their open guitar chords and want to open up their playing to more possibilities with melody and bass lines. Sat, June 4, 11-1 pm.
• Don McGlashan Songwriting Workshop - one this country’s greatest song writers and singers will be conducting a songwriting Workshop. Open to all abilities. Sat June 4, 11-1pm.
• Regan Perry Looping Workshop (free) - Regan is hosting a free workshop, where you can learn the art of solo performance using nothing more than a loop pedal, a guitar. Sat, June 4, 1:30–2:30pm,
• Hobnail Stagecraft Workshop - Folk group Hobnail originating in Wellington and including musicians who have played with some of the most popular bands in New Zealand are offering a Stagecraft Workshop, aimed at providing young musicians and performers with the skills and confidence to present themselves and their music with confidence and style. Sat June 4th, 11-12.30pm.
• Inside Miho’s Jazz Orchestra - BE part of MJO’s music and learn how to create a great blended sound and highlight the magnificence of each band member in a totally inclusive experience. Sun, June 5, 11–1pm.
• Big Muffin Serious Band Ukulele Workshop - Beyond Three Chords. Graeme Cairns and the musicalists from the Big Muffin Serious Band have a ukulele tuition method called “The Dancing Chords”, which is equally popular with people of all ages. Sun, June 5, 2-3.30pm.
• Caitlin Smith Vocal Styles Workshop - Troubleshooting and styling vocals. Essential for both established and emerging performers, this workshop will provide a rare opportunity to get some personal guidance from one of the best. Sun, June 5, 1.30-3.30pm
